RACE REPORT: ASTRO 5K
Thrilling, exciting and bit of nervousness - those are the words that best describe the experiences running the 1st Annual ASTRO 5K Race on November 1st in sunny San Diego. It was an awesome morning to start the day off with a run before a full day of activities at the ASTRO Convention.
254 participants laced up their running shoes for the early morning start outside the San Diego Convention Center on a level course that meandered along the beautiful waterfront. Dark skies at the start quickly illuminated as the sun appeared over the mountains to the east. Cool temperatures had each runner ready to erupt as the start gun went off.
Each entrant paid a fee to run with all the proceeds benefiting the ROI. Race sponsor Radiation Business Solutions also put up a $5000 challenge to anyone who could beat RBS employee John Ramsay with the money being donated to ROI in the winner's name. Three runners accepted the challenge and toed the line with Ramsay at the start. Matthew McCurdy was victorious and finished with an impressive time of 16:07 besting the RBS runner. In second place was Jonathan Feddock with a time of 16:35 followed by Ramsay at 17:08. Olympic Marathon Trial participant Megan Daly was the female winner with a time of 17:59, Kara Leonard finished in second place at 18:33 and Emilie Soisson took third in 19:30.
Runners hung out and rehashed the events of the morning while rewarding themselves with some much deserved post-race grub before heading off to start another busy day. Over $20,000 was raised for ROI and a solid foundation for future 5K's at ASTRO that will undoubtedly grow bigger in number of runners and money raised for ROI. Congratulations again to the winner of the 1st Annual ASTRO 5K Matthew McCurdy!!
